Des Moines Roosters Go Down But Win

The Des Moines Roosters played a hybrid Milwaukee Bombers team Saturday but went down fighting after leading at half time. The Bombers winning 15.21.111 to the Des Moines Roosters 8.14.62 in a competitive game all day.

The game was played at the Des Moines Rugby Complex, in West Des Moines due to the usual local ground the Southwoods Complex was unavailable.

Despite a rather brisk wind and the slightest hint of misty rain in the air the game commenced in front of a great crowd of over 100 new supporters.

A rather evenly matched first period, despite the doubling on the scoreboard. The Bombers actually had more scoring kicks, but couldn't find a straight kick if they had to. Marks were dead even, and the consistent tackling of the Roosters led to multiple goal kicks. Des Moines leading 4-3 to 1.7 at the first break.

Scoring was even in second, and although the Bombers had the better of the ball movement, again the fortunate kicking of the Roosters (and some Bomber mistakes giving away frees) led to a 14-point halftime lead. Roosters 6.7 to 3.11

The game opened up for the Milwaukee Bombers kicking 12 goals to 2 in the second half. The Bombers relying on 5 Des Moines players and a few that traveled up from KC the result in the end was not indicative of the effort of the Roosters. At the last break the Bombers had kicked away to a 33 point lead.

In the final quarter the Roosters tried hard but the damage had been done in the third.

Final Scores

Des Moines Roosters 8 - 14 - 62

Milwaukee Bombers 15 - 21 - 111

So a great of footy. Milwaukee obviously struggling for numbers are no longer the team they once were in 2005 and 2006 but with the help of the Roosters came away with the win. Perhaps that might help them get back on track for the Nationals in a few weeks.

A crowd of almost 100 spectators were treated to a terrific game with the Roosters supporters showing great enthusiasm and support with many new backers who saw Aussie Rules for the first time.
