The second MAAFL game of the weekend is on Saturay May 30 at 2pm (Central) with the Minnesota Freeze hosting next door neighbors the Milwaukee Bombers at Nakomis Park (Cedar Ave S & E 50th St, Minneapolis MN).
Freeze Head Coach, Jason Becker, is keen to get the MAAFL season underway after just over a month of practice and metro games. "The rivalry has always been good, and there has always been an undercurrent of support from one club to the other. I understand that Milwaukee have had some changes in their club structure in 2009 as well as an influx of new, young players. So I anticipate some of the more experienced guys will help some of the first-gamers on both sides. It should be a good hit out, with some hard play, compared to metro, but also with a spirit of helping each other get better and, out of the corners of our eyes, watching the new guys fall in love with the game."
Minnesota have two players gaining experience in Australia with the Western Australian Country Football League. "We're missing a couple big hitters this Saturday. Andrew Werner and Brent Mergen are playing in Western Australia. I can't wait to see their improvement at the next opportunity. Mergo's grandfather just passed away, so he was back in the states this week. It meant a lot to him and his family that he could make it back for the ceremony. He's on his way back to Oz as I type. Mergs will probably stay in Australia after the footy season, so we'll miss him for Nationals. Tiger Werner plans to come back to the Freeze in time for Nats, barring an AFL contract, of course," says Becker. That said he is hoping to see good things from his young contigent of players including Revos Danny Hanson and Ryan Marx.
