ImageThe US Revolution kicked off their 2010 season with a winter camp in Austin Texas. New head coach, Matt Bishop, was keen to get the team together with a series of camps throughout the year culminating with the big game against the Canadian Northwind in Toronto in early August. There were a number of new faces looking to impress the Revo coaching staff. One was Minnesota's big man, Andrew Werner. Werner spent much of 2009 playing footy in the Western Australian country leagues and is looking forward to contributing to the Revos.

ImageMinor league team, the Western Magpies in the AFL Queensland league, signed 24 year old Golden Gate Roo, Bryan Dragus. Originally from LA, the 6'6'' 215lbs, Dragus was signed on the senior list by the Brisbane club.

He was identified by USFooty Vice President Leigh Barnes who is involved the Golden Gate Roos who Dragus played for last season in the US. Former Western Magpies president Matt Vowles saw Dragus play for the Roos while on holidays in the States last year and came back spruiking about his raw talent and ability to club officials.

From that point Dragus made contact with Western Magpies CDM Anthony McDonald and from the beginning showed a determination to come to Australia of his own accord and have a go at making the Magpies 2010 list. From that point McDonald assisted Dragus to organise a 12 month visitation and work Visa and accommodation and employment on arrival in Brisbane.

ImageDelegates from 15 Australian football leagues around Europe converged on Frankfurt last weekend to officially found the European Australian Football Association, the long-awaited first pan-European governing body for the sport of Australian rules football. Following on from the summit held in conjunction with the 2009 EU Cup in Zagreb, the conference has seen a governance structure put in place, with the financial and logistical backing of the AFL.

A six-member commission has been elected, featuring both sports management professionals and leaders of national leagues in Europe, along with the appointment of Gerard Murphy as EAFA chairman and the creation of a full-time Regional Development Officer position being funded by the AFL.

US and Canada prepare for U18 World Team
Written by Brett Northey
Thursday, 21 January 2010

ImageWhen the Australian Football League announced plans to include a World XVIII in the AFL NAB Under 16 state championships in Western Sydney in 2010, there was genuine excitement that the team would provide an unprecedented pathway for young talent around the world. But clearly the squad was likely to be dominated by Papua New Guinea, South Africa and some Oceanian countries. The recent news that the AFL will now have two international sides - the World 18 and a Pacific Islands side, gives new impetus to those nations such as the US and Canada with smaller junior programs to put forward their young players.

It's likely that the nation providing the most to the World 18 will be South Africa, where a strongly supported program has nearly 20,000 juniors participating. Given this is a new concept and international players are unlikely to have had the same level of exposure to Aussie Rules as most Australian participants, the AFL is allowing players up to 18 years old to compete in the World sides.

We understand that when considering their nominations, international affiliates have been encouraged to look at the averages for each of the position categories to provide an accurate assessment of the players' athletic capabilities compared to the Australian (under 18) talent pool.

Tonga takes Oceania U16 tourney
Written by Brett Northey
Sunday, 20 December 2009

ImageThe Kingdom of Tonga emerged as the unexpected winner of the inaugural youth Oceania Cup. The under-16 tournament, staged in Fiji’s capital Suva, was to bring together the best young talent from the region’s six Australian Football-playing nations, but warm favourites Papua New Guinea withdrew due to immigration and flight problems, leaving New Zealand in pole position. On day one, windy conditions were a challenge for all sides but the opening games held no major surprises. The Kiwis and Tongans each won both of their games, while Samoa was unlucky to narrowly lose both of theirs. Nauru split their two games but host Fiji, getting their first taste of the sport, had two competitive losses.

USFooty recruits for the U18 World Team
Written by Chris Adams
Sunday, 06 December 2009

At the end of October, the AFL announced that a World XVIII team would play in the 2010 NAB Under 16 National Championships. This competition is the highest level of competition for elite junior players in Australia and something of a draft camp for the AFL. The team could include players under the age of 18 from the USA. Shortly, after the announcement, USFooty asked those interested in playing on the World Team to put forward a nomination to USFooty's International Liason, Paul O'Keeffe. "We have had six nominations and I am really pleased with the response. Based on what I know today I am highly confident that a number of the players will be selected," says O'Keeffe.
