Revo Sarbacker makes senior debut for Mansfield

ImageAustralian country footy is full of legend and lore. Country footy is not full of Americans. So what's an American doing playing senior footy in the competition considered the best in the bush, the Goulburn Valley league?

Dan Sarbacker was at a loss when he finished his study and soccer commitments at the University of Washington in St Louis. Sarbacker saw the chance to fulfil his competitive instincts when he heard about an Australian football team called the St Louis Blues. Most large American cities have an Australian football team. At 23, Sarbacker began his footy odyssey. In recent years, he's been the captain of the US Revolution. In what must be a unique double, his sister Jenny is the captain of the US women's team.

Sarbacker looks for the handpass at the 2008 International Cup.

Geoghegan stands out for Freedom

ImageWhen the US and Canadian women’s national teams squared off in the Australian Rules Football 49th Parallel Cup last weekend in Toronto. Eileen Geoghegan of Merrimac suited up as a ruck rover for Team USA and at game’s end, got honorable mention in the MVP voting. Not bad for a young woman who played footy for the first time just a year ago and who, because of a limited number of full-fledged women’s teams, plays with the Baltimore-Washington Eagles men’s team. She earned her way onto the national team after a string of impressive performances at tryouts in Denver and New York.

Revos too fit for Northwind
Written by Matt Bishop and Matt Jagger
Monday, 09 August 2010

Image Humber College’s Lakeshore Campus, situated right on the banks of Lake Ontario near Toronto, provided the picturesque setting for the 2010 49th Parallel Cup between the American Revolution and the Canadian Northwind. A Canadian victory in Vancouver in 2007 and with both teams preparing for the International Cup, in Australia in August of 2011, this promised to be a great game of Australian Football.

After the national anthems and the coin toss, the teams were ready to go. The first tap was won and cleared by the Canadians, in what would be a sign of things to come in the first quarter. Canada began with a defensive game plan similar to that employed against the Americans in the 2007 defeat of the Revolution in Vancouver. Early on it seemed the plan would be effective again.

South Pacific too good for World 18
Written by Fiona Austen
Sunday, 04 July 2010

Portland's McPhee named in World 18's best, but South Pacific were too strong. The South Pacific entered the first round of the NAB AFL Under 16 Championships as warm favourites to beat the World XVIII squad, and they proved to be deserving of that position, stretching their lead at every break, though really only breaking free in the last quarter, to win by 32 points.
