The largest Australian Rules football tournament in the world, the U.S. Australian Football League (USAFL) 2010 National Tournament, will be held in Louisville at Champions Park on River Road Oct. 9-10.
“We are thrilled to return to the birthplace of Aussie Rules football in the U.S.,” said Richard Mann, USAFL president and tournament director. He said the “first ever game of Aussie Rules football played in the U.S. took place in Louisville in 1996. The city and the Louisville Sports Commission have been great partners in helping to bring the 2010 national tournament to Louisville.”

On Sunday October 11, Denver won its seventh USFooty National Championship after defeating the Seattle Grizzlies 2.5 (17) to 2.2 (14). It was a perfect day for footy with temperatures reaching up into the sixties on a beautiful and sunny Fall day in Mason OH. The fields remained in pretty good shape despite the rain during the week and the hard wear of a weekend of footy. Denver won all of its group games to easily make it into the USFooty Division I Final. On Sunday Denver wrapped up its run to the final with an easy win over the 2008 USFooty Champs the Vancouver Cougars. Seattle were able to take advantage of the wet conditions to eek out a victory over the Orange County Bombers. To get into the final however, Seattle needed the Baltimore Washington Eagles to get a big win over the New York Magpies. The Eagles were happy to oblige and trashed the Magpies playing a fast and skillful brand of football that looked nothing like their games on Saturday.

The weather started out a bit overcast as the teams made it onto the massive Heritage Oak Park with its 5 footy fields. The rain over the last few days had made the fields a little damp but in relatively good condition and certainly one of the best fields the Nationals has seen.

In the first game of the day, Denver took on the Boston Demons and handled them pretty well. It wasn't all good news for Denver as they had a few injuries including the loss of their coach Tommy Ellis. Ellis would coach on the sidelines for the rest of the tournament. The first upset of the day, came with Seattle holding off the Baltimore Washington Eagles. Seattle were hard at the ball and were rewarded with three goals in the first half. In the second half they were able to bottle up the Eagles and get the win.
