This coming weekend sees the start of Women's footy games in the USA in 2008 with the inaugural 'Duel in the Desert' hosted by the Arizona Lady Hawks. The games taking place Saturday in Gilbert AZ and will be played mainly in the morning due to the weatherman predicting 100deg. plus temperatures.
The tournament the first of its kind for women's footy outside the USAFL's Nationals will see three teams competing. The reigning National Champions the Atlanta Lady Kookaburras will be in town looking to keep their unbeaten run in tact as well as the newest team in Women's footy the Denver Lady Bulldogs.
The local Arizona Hawks will be looking to be Atlanta's biggest threat. After a close game at the Nationals last year they were out gunned in the final a day later and will be looking to improve on that and try and knock off the Lady Kookaburras from their perch.
The three teams will do battle in a round robin style event under the desert sun with for sure the dominant team holding a good chance to be top seed come October in Colorado Springs. The games are expected to be 14 aside and played under full match conditions.
For those not worn out by Saturdays events a USA Freedom Squad training session is planned for Sunday morning in preparations of players selection to the 08-09 team to travel to Australia next July.
