Monday morning half back

From my position on the half back line (on the flank, up the hill a bit, in my five buck camp chair with the Coopers holder), I could see it was quite a weekend for footy. The No. 4 New York Magpies were the big winners from the weekend and took their wins to the top of the USFootyNews.com unofficial table. Ahead, on percentage, of the No. 2 Baltimore Washington Eagles and setting up a great game in Baltimore on July 12. Not far behind were the No. 6 Golden Gate Roos who took a win in their 2008 series against the No. 1 San Diego Lions. It should be interesting to see what the voters make of the Lions loss this weekend considering recent wins by New York and BW Eagles as well as No. 3 Denver's domination in the Portland Invitational.

That said, the most exciting game of the weekend came from a most unexpected source - the Milwaukee Bombers scraping home against the Ohio Valley combination of Louisville and Cincinnati in Louisville. The Bombers were neck and neck and then had a burst of goals in the "premiership quarter" (the third), but Ohio Valley never gave up and stormed home but Matt Seuling's goal after the siren was not enough to give Ohio Valley its first win.

The Boston Demons would be happy to have a solid first win in an EAFL game of 2008. They lost to New York in the friendly but that game didn't count for EAFL points. North Carolina's young team should be congratulated for the effort of traveling to New York to play two top 10 teams on the same day. Their Head Coach, Jason Heathcote, saw the weekend as a learning experience, and I'm sure the boys learned a great deal about both footy and the character of their teammates.

The San Diego Lions will be very disappointed to lose on the road to Golden Gate. Head Coach, Simon Shenk, was expecting a tough game, but it is always disappointing to lose a game in the first quarter and never quite have enough to win even after matching or beating the Roos for next three quarters. On the other hand, Golden Gate, is now 1-1 and gained some respect around USFooty.
