The No. 1 San Diego Lions (1-1) host the No. 6 Orange County Bombers (1-1) on Saturday July 12 in what should be classic southern Californian clash. San Diego will be looking to get back on track after receiving a beating from Golden Gate in San Francisco and OC will be looking to conitinue their improved form after beating Golden Gate in Los Angeles.
Game time is 11.30am at Naval Training Center Park in San Diego. After match is at Desi N Friends.
This game will have important implications for the USFooty Nationals and for a weekend where 4 of the top 6 teams in the country play, there should be some interesting things to say come Monday.
Since their loss to Golden Gate, the Lions have been working to get back on track. "Preparations over the past few weeks have been good. After a disappointing loss it doesn't take too much to get the focus back, and I expect that the boys will be looking to put their best foot forward this weekend. In saying that, with a large group of new players, and new blokes to the club, as well as an altered coaching staff, we are still finding our feet as a team. We have lost a few key players over the past month, but look forward to the return of others. Irrespective, this is a big game for us, and we are looking forward to the challenge against OC," says San Diego Head Coach Simon Schenk.
Since their win over Golden Gate back at the end of May, the Bombers have been finishing their SoCal footy season. After nine rounds the Beachside Sharks finished 7-2 and head into the Grand Final with the OC Jets on July 27. Head Coach, John Fragomeni, is looking forward to the challenge of playing San Diego on the road. "I have not been involved in the US Footy scene long, but what I do know is that San Diego is one of the very good established football clubs in the national competition. I'm sure they will be a different side at home and will field a strong side looking to re-bound from Golden Gate. Playing at home can be a contributing advantage but to be a good side you need to be able to travel well. We are yet to prove that this season."
A number of US Revolution players will be working hard for their club sides on Saturday. For the Lions there is backman Brett Ullmann, flanker JJ Cisneros, Revo stallwarts Donnie Locero and Brandon Blankenship. Unfortunatley, forward Justin Valley, is out although should be fit for by the International Cup. OC is represented by Andy Lindsey and the Nelson brothers, Kelly and Kurth.
