What a weekend of footy! Four of the top 6 teams in the country faced off on either coast. On the East Coast, the No. 3 Baltimore Washington Eagles hosted the No. 4 New York Magpies in Baltimore, while on the West Coast, the No. 1 San Diego Lions hosted the No. 6 Orange County Bombers.
The Eagles and the Magpies fought out a tough game in Baltimore. While the Eagles led all day, the team with the wind won every quarter. The Pies had the wind in the last quarter but kicked 1.5 including a miss after a great mark in the goal square. With the clock ticking down, the Eagles were able to bottle the ball up and hold out for a win that moves them to the top of the USFootyNews unofficial table, puts them odds on to take the 2008 EAFL Premiership and makes them one of the favorites for the Division 1 Championship in October. That said, the Magpies were very unlucky not to pull out the win. New York had great defense all day and certainly had their chances when the game was on the line. If the East coast game was a tough close quarters battle, the West coast game was a fast moving open affair. The game was played at San Diego's new field at the Naval Training Center and with its wide open spaces, the field gave both teams the opportunity to run. At three quarter time the game was dead even. However, in a great five minutes of footy, the Bombers kicked three goals and took the wind out of the Lions sails. The Bombers kicked another two goals to seal the game. Revo, Kelly Nelson, was the stand out for a Bombers that has beat two ranked teams in their last two games.
