The Atlanta Lady Kookaburras kept their unbeaten record intact at the National Championships in Louisville Kentucky with four solid wins and won their third National Championship trophy. The Lady Kookaburras after having a tough time against the eventual finalist opponents the improving Arizona Hawks on Saturday, put it all together for the final on Sunday winning 7.7.49 to 0.0.0.

That's not a pretty picture for any losing team but the Kookaburras did not have everything their own way just were more accomplished in 1, scoring when the ball went forward and 2, clearing the ball quickly and effectively from the backline.

The Lady Kookaburras also were sporting a fairly new line up for the women's games which has already grown to a 14 a side game competition in just three short years. Considering there are only a handful of games around the country each year its a feather in the cap for the women's movement to have a great competition already happening at the Nationals Championships.

This year four teams competed for the first time. The Milwaukee Lady Bombers in their second full year and a combined team consisting of players from the Baltimore Washington First Ladies and the Calgary Kookaburras made up the women's division. (Yes that's another team called the Kookaburras, but traveling all the way from Canada in their first year also is a huge feat from the Canadian team). Both those teams put up great contests also on the weekend and the future looks bright for the development of women's football in the USA.

Back to the Kookaburras and Hawks game and there was little between the sides in endeavor for the two 20 minutes halves however the Atlanta women certainly appeared better drilled in the skills and fundamentals of the game. Atlanta also had plenty of tall players with rookies Katie Grist and Ashley Harmons in the ruck overpowering the hard working Tina Arend from Arizona. Around the ground also Atlanta had many winners in Sarbacker, Pizzari and Reinhardt picking up the crumbs around the packs and running hard forward. Atlanta Lady Kookaburras

Jenny Sarbacker of Atlanta and Tina Arend from Arizona shared the MVP medal for the tournament and Cathy Reinhardt also from Atlanta after a very scary neck injury at the 2006 Nationals in Vegas came back and as the oldest player in the women's competition won the Grand Final MVP. That was a huge effort and you could see she was thrilled when she received her medal from Carlton legend Steve Silvagni, the AFL's Full Back of the Century.
