Two US players have nominated for the World 18 Team to be coached by former Sydney Swans star Michael O'Loughlin, Portland Power's Alex McPhee and Milwaukee Bomber Chris Franzen. If selected by the AFL, the boys will fly to Australia for a training in Melbourne at the end of June and then to Sydney to compete in the second division of the NAB U16 Championships which includes the elite regional selections from Australian states and a South Pacific team with players from New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and a some of the South Pacific Islands.
Alex McPhee has followed Collingwood's Shae McNamara's example with a YouTube audition tape. Milwaukee's Franzen also has YouTube video, but riding your bike into the freezing cold waters of Lake Michigan doesn't really show off one's football ability - maybe guts and determination.
The boys will be competing for slots against a large number of Canadian and South African nominations as well as from Australian based players who will be selected from "multicultural" camps designed to show case the footy skills of recent immigrants to Australia.
