The US Revolution are ranked third behind New Zealand and Papau New Guinea in WorldFootyNews.com's "points exchange" ranking system. WorldFootyNews.com has calculated rankings based on the International Rugby Board's system which uses game results to determine rankings. WorldFootyNews.com has calculated results based on games played since 1994, giving twice the weight to games played during an International Cup tournament.
The basic idea is that each team starts with 40 points and a win gives 1 point, while a loss gives -1 point. However, if the winning team starts with more points than the losing team, then the winning team's points go up by less than 1 and the losing team's points go down by less than one. If it is the other way, so the lower ranked team wins, then the winning teams points go up by more than 1. For example, if the winning team is 5 points better than the losing team, then the winning teams points only go up by 0.5 and the losing teams points only go down by 0.5. At most a teams points can change by 2. If the winning margin is greater than 40 points, then the point change is multiplied by 1.5 (ie it could change by as much as 3 points). To account for home advantage, the home team is treated as if it is ranked higher by 3 points before the game.
If the US wins against Canada in late July, the US is unlikely to rise because NZ and PNG are a fair way ahead. However, if the US loses to Canada it will drop down to 4th.
There is more discussion of the system at WorldFootyNews.com World Rankings and the International Rugby Board's World Rankings explanation. Note that the WorldFootyNews.com system adapts to the scoring of Aussie Rules by using a 40 point margin instead of the 15 point margin in the IRB's version.
