3 pools of 3 teams. It looks like the combined teams will have as many as 26 or 27 players in a Division playing 14 or 16 players per side. Is this the best solution?
Division 4
Yeah Colonel where do you start,? At a quick glance it appears the league have ran out of field schedule time therefore have to make bigger teams.
Probably the first thing that surprised me was the numbers some teams are bringing, and there are two teams that have been excluded from division 3 by NY B's inclusion there. Des Moines and LasVegas, both with enough numbers to play standalone in division 3. I cant say I have seen NY B play too many games this year, well not away anyway.
Division 4 was I thought was for reserves teams and extra players that cant fit in their main team. It looks to me the league might need to split the reserves teams to their own mini comp, and then have the makeup teams also playing in their own separate division.
There is no easy answer but back to my first point it appears a scheduling issue more than anything.
It seems to me that the whole point of Div 4 is giving everyone a chance to participate, and teams of 26 or 27 players aren't a satisfactory solution for that.
Maybe 10 teams in Div 3 would have been a better solution, with each team playing 4 games. They might have made the games a little shorter - instead of three 40 minute games, play four 30 minute games.
Take two teams from Div 4 into Div 3, and Div 4 starts to make more sense.
We're at the point, like it or lump it, where the format is going to have to change at some level. Either just at the bottom like Colonel has mentioned, or to the whole thing.
I like the idea of two five team pools playing a 30-minute format. This would reduce the time needed per game to 45 minutes. It would require a second field (the Divvy 4 field probably) to play some simultaneous games and two semi-final matches. Divvy 4 may have to be scaled back to four teams to allow this to happen, unless the league decides to add a sixth field. I'd still keep the Grand Final at 40 minutes, though.
They should trial this with Divvy 3 next year and maybe push it to Divvy 2 if it's successful. Divvy 1 should remain the same, I think. But yeah, they're going to need to change it at some point.
Agreed, we have been using the same format since when 2001?...i know in 2002 in KC when I first went it was the same, i think there were 5 teams in Divvy three.
Its a good and bad thing ...more players wanting to participate, so it either has go to shorter games or more days or more fields.
And really I wanted to see the Div 1 final at least, go to 4qs by now.
Why would it require an extra field? With 30 minute games, you have 12 games per field in a day rather than only 9 games. And, if you look at the game schedule, there are already extra time slots available on all fields.
I'd like to see an extra division on an extra field, but it seems the USAFL is struggling to find venues with enough space for the current five fields.
I do like the idea of semi-finals in a 10 team competition, though.
Scaling back Div 4 doesn't achieve anything and isn't necessary. The idea of Div 4 is to give everyone a chance to participate.
I agree that eight teams is plenty for Div 1. From what I've read, only eight teams nominated for Div 1 this year, and I think we'll find that at least a couple of those teams should have been in Div 2. Div 1 won't need to expand any time soon.
Well, by "extra field" I mean the Div 4 field, but remember that whether or not they do pools, you're looking at 20 games instead of twelve, as well as three 'finals' matches instead of the one final. I think, though, that it there will be times when two other fields would be free, especially if there are only 6 womens and D4 teams.
I'm with Wayne that the the Div 1 GF should be four quarters. It might be a scheduling thing, though.
I can see your point: 23 games at 45 minutes each = over 17 hours of field use, whereas currently Div 3 requires only 13 hours. I just don't see Div 4 being scaled back to six teams. This year it has nine teams and enough players for more, so scaling back to eight teams (by moving teams up to Div 3) seems to be about the limit.
I agree that the Div 1 final would be better with four quarters. It's too prestigious to be decided in an abbreviated match.
I see the Cincinnati Dockers won Div 4???... http://www.cincinnatidockers.com/
Funny didnt even know they were there, oh sorry I think they had a few players there playing with 10 Milwaukee players, 5 from St Louis, a few from Louisville and even I see a Dayton Ohio t shirt in their "Premiership" photo...
Give me a break....but full marks to their publicity department...
USAFL.com has it variously as Ohio River Valley/Milwaukee, Milwaukee/Ohio Valley and OHV/Milwaukee. Milwaukee is claiming the championship, too, though with more mention of the other contributors. Ironically, I seem to remember Bomber jerseys...
